Fratty Outfits for Every Occasion: Holiday Edition

December 12th, 2010

Wondering what to wear throughout the holidays this year? While your friends are decking the halls, make sure you’re decked out in the frattiest attire. When the dress code doesn’t call for “Tacky Christmas Sweater”, follow these simple guidelines:

A festive button down in a plaid or buffalo check pattern in red or green is always an easy and festive option:

Brooks Brothers Regular Fit Ground Check Sports Shirt

(Brooks Brothers “NON IRON” variety can go right in the washing machine and onto your back)

The holidays is a great time to break the mold of boring predictable khakis and a button down. The chilly weather also is a perfect time to break out the corduroys for a little extra warmth. A festive green or caramel brown always compliments the best holiday outfit.

Vineyard Vines Muddler Corduroy Club Pants

There are so few acceptable fratty shoes but the holidays is the perfect time to break out your “dress” shoes (anything other than a pair of New Balance 991s or Clark’s Wallabees). Cole Haan is a great source for good old-fashioned (aka frat-tastic) penny loafers, and so is Johnston & Murphy. But if your holidays calls for a dressier shoe,  try a pair with tassels or a gold D-ring buckle:

Every good frat star should have a girlfriend who has needle-pointed a belt for you during your college career. The ultimate fratty staple (customizable to whatever you like: beer logos, college mascot, Greek letters) comes in holiday editions too that add a finishing touch to any holiday outfit:

Frat Hard or Go Home

December 6th, 2010

The fratty style guide, The Preppy Handbook, is considered to be a modern-day Guide to Style for the well-pedigreed fratstar. If a copy of the book wasn’t put in your stocking as an adolescent, (if you don’t own one, buy one used and act as though you’ve always had one) use this abridged guide to sartorial sophistication to make sure that you are prepped out to the max at every occasion. Written over 30 years ago, this handbook, while originally written as a parody, is a helpful and useful guide for the fratstar in everyone. Or if you can’t find a copy, pick up Lisa Birnbach’s latest updated tome True Prep: It’s a Whole New Old World which, thirty years later, modernizes the traditional preppy staples like L.L. Bean monogrammed canvas bags and Sperry topsiders. Her contemporary look at the age-old world of prep brings the frat world into the twenty-first century.

Remember, without these helpful tools, there’s always someone else whose argyle, seersucker, or poplin is making you look like a G.D.I.

The Barbour Jacket

December 4th, 2010

Worn by everyone from the Queen of England to Chuck Bass, these classic British staples offer just the right amount of elitism and comfort,  the fun-and-function combo that any frat star is looking for. Since their birth in 1984 the popularity of these waxed confections has found its way across the pond to frat basements on the backs of both sorosititutes and fratdogs alike. And while these jackets are having a major moment, aside from fashion they are actually really fractical (fratty+practical, i.e. magnetic koozies, croakies, duck boots etc).  There are a few iterations to choose from:

So if you haven’t made your Christmas list and checked it twice yet, ask mom and dad for one of these for the holidays. Use the excuse that hunting, fishing, tailgating, and fratting wouldn’t be possible without it.  OR if you’re looking to go a cheaper route (we are in a recession after all) check out the Filson Cover Cloth Weekender Coat (Barbour’s fraternal twin brother coat) for a more affordable option. Beer-goggled sorority chicks won’t be able to tell the difference:

To save even more money, look to get any of these frat staples on Sierra Trading Post: Barbour and Filson

Revelry to ensue.
